Indian-American Business Owner Makes History in Small-Town Texas Election

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Rusk, TX, May 15, 2026 — Yash Asarsa, an Indian immigrant and local business owner, has made history by becoming the first Indian-American elected to the Rusk City Council, marking a milestone for both the East Texas city and the growing South Asian presence in local American politics.

Asarsa, who owns Truckerz gas station in Rusk, won the election for the city’s District 3 council seat earlier this month. His victory was confirmed ahead of the city council’s swearing-in ceremony on May 14 at Rusk City Hall, according to local election coverage and the city meeting agenda.

Located in Cherokee County, about 130 miles southeast of Dallas, Rusk is a small East Texas community with a population of roughly 5,000 residents. Asarsa’s election is being viewed as a significant moment in a region where immigrant representation in elected office has historically been limited.

In interviews with local media, Asarsa said his journey to public office was shaped by his experience as both a small business owner and a member of the local community. Originally from India, he built his life in Texas before deciding to enter public service.

Local television station CBS19 described his win as a historic first for the city, noting that Asarsa is the first Indian-American to serve on the council.

Asarsa is expected to join other newly elected council members in addressing city issues ranging from infrastructure improvements and municipal services to economic development.
