Indian-Origin Man Faces Backlash After Dance Video Filmed at World War II Memorial Goes Viral

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Washington, D.C., March 9, 2026: A social media video showing an Indian-origin man dancing with a woman at the World War II Memorial has sparked widespread criticism online and prompted scrutiny over whether the act violated rules governing conduct at U.S. national memorials.

The short video, filmed at the memorial on the National Mall, shows the pair performing a choreographed dance commonly seen in social media reels. The clip circulated widely on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok over the past week, drawing backlash from many users who said the performance was inappropriate at a site dedicated to honoring American soldiers who served in the Second World War.

The memorial commemorates the 16 million Americans who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who died during the conflict. Critics argued that filming a dance at the location was disrespectful to the solemn purpose of the monument.

The man in the video, identified in several media reports as Madhu Raju, is believed to work in the technology sector and may be in the United States on a temporary work visa. Following the viral spread of the video, some social media users called for authorities to revoke his visa and deport him.

There has been no official confirmation that any deportation proceedings have been initiated.

According to guidelines governing national memorials managed by the National Park Service, certain commercial filming and organized performances may require permits, though casual photography and video recording by visitors are generally allowed.

As criticism mounted online, reports said the man removed some of his social media accounts and issued an apology acknowledging that the video may have offended people.

The incident has also sparked debate on social media about the appropriateness of filming entertainment content at historic sites, as well as accusations of double standards after some users shared other videos showing visitors dancing at the same location.
