Atlanta, GA: The Board of Trustees of The Children’s School (TCS) announced recently that Nishant N. Mehta assumed the role as Head of The Children’s School, on May 1, 2013. Formerly the Assistant Head of School at Alexandria Country Day School in Virginia, Nishant has brought to TCS his wealth of experience in, knowledge of, and passion for progressive elementary education.

Nishant had this to share about his three months at TCS so far, “Each interaction has left me feeling more confident and more enthusiastic about the richness of our community and the diversity that informs our philosophy, curriculum and experiences. Each interaction has also affirmed that at The Children’s School, the children are at the center of who we are and what we do.”

As Assistant Head at Alexandria Country Day School, Nishant played a vital role in the integration of technology and curriculum, launching a 1:1 iPad initiative in grades 5-8. Continuing the School’s connection to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Nishant brings his experience serving on the NAIS Curriculum/Technology Task Force where he developed a working document of curricular, marketing and financial opportunities and challenges for independent schools on 21st century skills. To quote a Trustee, “He is an ideal, well-rounded candidate with equal strengths in curriculum development, finance and capital management, marketing and fundraising. He has a passion for technology and expertise and experience with integrating it into the classroom.”

In his roles of teacher and proponent of faculty professional development, Nishant has focused primarily on cultivating children as citizens of a global community. Having lived in four different countries, he himself speaks multiple languages and has experienced first-hand the growing complexity and challenges of our global society. In addition to his curriculum and faculty development work, Nishant is a member of the NAIS Equity & Justice team and has served as co-chair and faculty member of the annual People of Color Conference that centers on the issue of diversity in schools. According to Patsy Ward, Principal of Lower School at TCS, “I was especially impressed with Nishant’s vision to use The Children’s School commitment to diversity and progressive education as a national model for schools at the elementary level.  TCS is extremely well-positioned for Nishant’s innovative leadership to take us to the next level of educational excellence.”

Founded in 1970, The Children’s School is an independent, co-ed, elementary school that provides a learning environment in which academic development is stressed with social and emotional growth.  The atmosphere is a caring, nurturing one that fosters a deep sense of community. The Children’s School, located in Midtown Atlanta, recruits and sustains a diverse student body of approximately 400 students three years old through the sixth grade. The mission of The Children’s School is to enrich minds and inspire dreams.
