Dress for Success: Denmark Highschool students lead professional clothing donation effort

BY JYOTHSNA HEGDE

Atlanta, GA, April 23, 2024: Inspired by an Intro to Business and Tech class at Denmark High School that promotes ‘Dress for Success’ days, three 9th grade students – Rishi Patel, Christopher Twomey, and Jack Hardy – alongside their supportive teacher, Mr. Jarrod Shirley of Denmark High School set to make a difference in the community, spearheading a Professional Clothing Drive on March 28, 2024 at Fowler Park.

Throughout the career and technical education curriculum in Forsyth County, occupational dress codes are studied as part of the pathway. In addition, students are taught and shown examples of proper interview attire in preparation for community Mock Interview Weeks, CTSO events, scholarship interviews, graduation ceremonies, and other important times during their high school careers. While the essential components of Dress for Success Days do focus on campus impact, family/community connections, CTSO connections, the track also encourages students to organize service-learning projects around dressing successfully, much like the drive organized by these students.

The students partnered with Your Pie, which offered a 10% coupon for every two pieces of clothing that are donated, amplifying their impact. The successful clothing drive raised 28 ties, 14 shirts, 3 pants, 7 dresses, 6 blazers, 1 belt, and 1 pair of shoes. 60 total pieces of professional clothing pieces. These clothes will go to students in need of professional clothing for class.

“I thought the drive was a huge success, surpassing our expectations due to donations pouring in even after the event. This experience helped me improve my communication skills as I made numerous phone calls to different businesses, progressively getting better after each call—overall, it was a successful event!” Rishi Patel said.
