Judge K.P. George Convicted in Texas Money Laundering Case

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Fort Bend County, Texas, March 21, 2026:  In a significant development, Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George, an Indian-American elected official, has been found guilty of felony money laundering by a Texas jury, bringing a dramatic turn to a case tied to his 2018 election campaign finances.

The jury convicted George on two counts after deliberating on evidence that prosecutors said showed he improperly moved more than $46,000 from his campaign account into personal accounts. According to the prosecution, the funds were then used for personal expenses, including a down payment on a home, and were inaccurately reported in campaign finance filings.

George, who pleaded not guilty, maintained throughout the trial that the money in question was his own. His defense argued that he had loaned personal funds to his campaign and later reimbursed himself, calling the case a misunderstanding of campaign finance rules rather than a criminal act. His attorneys also stressed that there was no intent to commit fraud.

However, prosecutors described the transactions as a deliberate pattern of financial misrepresentation, ultimately persuading the jury.

George now faces a possible sentence ranging from two to ten years in prison, along with a fine of up to $10,000. Sentencing is expected in June 2026. He was taken into custody briefly after the verdict but has since been released on bond.

Despite the conviction, George may continue to hold office until sentencing and during any potential appeals, depending on legal proceedings.

The case has drawn attention not only because of George’s position as a county judge, but also because it applies money laundering charges in the context of campaign finance—an area that often operates in legal gray zones.

George, who had already lost his party primary earlier this year, has not indicated his next legal steps publicly, though an appeal is widely expected.
