NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
Atlanta, GA, April 8, 2026: Delta Air Lines has increased its checked baggage fees, becoming the latest U.S. carrier to pass rising operational costs on to travelers.
Under the new pricing, which took effect for tickets booked starting April 8, the fee for a first checked bag has risen from $35 to $45. The second checked bag now costs $55, up from $45, while a third checked bag has jumped sharply from $150 to $200.
The Atlanta-based airline said the increase is tied largely to surging jet fuel prices, which have climbed significantly in recent months amid global instability affecting oil supply. Airline executives have indicated that higher fuel costs are putting pressure on margins, prompting carriers to look for ways to offset expenses without substantially increasing base fares.
The updated fees apply primarily to domestic flights and short-haul international routes. Long-haul international travelers are largely unaffected, as many tickets in those markets continue to include complimentary checked baggage.
Some passengers will continue to be exempt from the higher fees. These include Delta SkyMiles elite members, travelers flying in premium cabins such as first class, active-duty military personnel, and certain co-branded credit card holders who qualify for free checked bags.
Industry analysts note that Delta’s move reflects a broader trend across the airline sector. Other major carriers, including United Airlines and JetBlue, have also raised baggage fees in recent months, citing similar cost pressures. Even Southwest Airlines, long known for its “bags fly free” policy, has signaled shifts in its pricing strategy.
