Decatur Jewelry Store Raided in Multi-State Gold Laundering Investigation

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Decatur, GA., February 25, 2026:  Federal and local law enforcement authorities on Wednesday raided the Decatur location of Malani Jewelers as part of a coordinated multi-state investigation into an alleged gold laundering operation connected to what officials describe as the “gold bar scam.”

Search warrants were also executed at the Malani Jewelers store in Richardson, Texas, and at Orlando Gold Refinery in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The sheriff’s office said it is coordinating the simultaneous warrant execution with the Lithonia Police Department in Georgia and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

CBS reports that in Richardson, approximately 20 SWAT officers entered the Malani Jewelers store on North Central Expressway, detained 13 employees, and seized crates of gold. Investigators allege that certain jewelry stores were purchasing gold obtained through fraud and melting it down to manufacture new jewelry items, including bracelets, thereby obscuring the origin of the metal.

Officials have alleged that some of the targeted businesses operated unauthorized gold-melting operations. Law enforcement has not publicly detailed the specific evidence related to the Decatur location, nor confirmed whether arrests were made there.

Alleged Fraud Scheme

Authorities say the investigation centers on a fraud tactic commonly referred to as the “gold bar scam,” which has primarily targeted elderly individuals.

In these cases, victims are contacted by individuals posing as law enforcement or government officials and are told their bank accounts have been compromised or that they face legal jeopardy. They are instructed to withdraw funds, purchase gold bars, and transfer the gold to couriers for purported safekeeping.

Investigators allege that some couriers delivered the gold to jewelry businesses, which then melted and resold the metal or transported it out of the country.

Since early last year, a task force established by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office in Texas has arrested more than a dozen suspected couriers in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Previous raids in Texas included actions at Tilak Jewelers in Irving and Saima Jewelers in Frisco, where authorities reported seizing millions of dollars in cash and gold.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not announced formal charges related to the Decatur location and have not released additional details about the scope of the Georgia operation.
