Meet Avan Jogia, the Enigmatic Star of Amazon Thriller ’56 Days’

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

When the psychological thriller 56 Days premiered on Amazon Prime Video earlier this year, audiences were drawn into its unsettling story of love, secrets, and murder during the early days of the pandemic. At the center of the drama is Oliver Kennedy, played by actor Avan Jogia, whose enigmatic performance has sparked renewed curiosity about the actor behind the role.

Though many viewers are discovering him through 56 Days, Jogia has been a familiar face in television for more than a decade—first as a teen idol and now as a versatile performer navigating darker, more complex roles.

From Vancouver to Hollywood

Avan Tudor Jogia was born on February 9, 1992, in Vancouver, Canada. He comes from a mixed background—his father is of British-Indian descent and his mother has European heritage.

Jogia decided early that he wanted to pursue acting professionally. At 17, he left school and moved to Los Angeles with a clear goal: land an acting role within six months.

The gamble paid off.

Nickelodeon Breakthrough

Jogia’s breakthrough came in 2010 when he was cast as Beck Oliver on the Nickelodeon series Victorious. The show, which starred Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice, quickly became a hit with younger audiences and turned Jogia into a recognizable teen television star.

However, Jogia has spent much of his career deliberately moving beyond that image. Over the years he has taken on roles in a wide range of projects including the mystery drama Twisted, the supernatural series Ghost Wars, and the surreal Starz show Now Apocalypse. He also portrayed the young Egyptian ruler in the historical miniseries Tut.

Outside acting, Jogia has explored other creative avenues as well. He directed the independent film Door Mouse in 2022 and has published poetry reflecting on identity, fame, and self-discovery.

Landing the Lead Role in 56 Days

Jogia’s newest wave of attention comes from the Amazon Prime Video limited series 56 Days, adapted from Catherine Ryan Howard’s bestselling novel.

The eight-episode psychological thriller follows Oliver Kennedy and Ciara Wyse, played by Dove Cameron, whose whirlwind relationship begins after they meet in a supermarket. Fifty-six days later, a decomposing body is discovered in Oliver’s apartment, setting off a gripping investigation into what really happened.

The series was greenlit by Amazon in late 2023, and Jogia and Cameron were officially cast as the leads in May 2024. Filming began the following month in Montreal, with the story’s setting moved from Dublin in the novel to Boston for the television adaptation.

Producers reportedly saw Jogia as an ideal fit for Oliver—a character who must appear charming and magnetic while also harboring secrets. Jogia’s earlier roles often placed him in similarly layered characters, making him comfortable portraying someone whose motives remain uncertain until the final reveal.

Another factor was the chemistry between Jogia and Cameron. Both actors rose to fame in youth-oriented television before transitioning to more mature projects, a shared experience that helped build trust on set.

Reinventing a Career

At 34, Jogia represents a generation of actors who grew up in the spotlight and are now redefining themselves in more adult roles. In 56 Days, his performance leans into psychological tension and moral ambiguity—far removed from the easygoing teen character he once played on Nickelodeon.

The transformation reflects a deliberate shift in Jogia’s career. Over the past decade he has gravitated toward darker narratives and unconventional characters, building a reputation for playing outsiders and mysterious figures.

That persona now anchors 56 Days, where the audience spends the series questioning whether Oliver Kennedy is a victim, a suspect, or something far more dangerous.

A Rising Presence in Streaming Drama

With streaming platforms increasingly driving television storytelling, actors like Jogia are finding new opportunities to showcase range and depth. 56 Days has placed him squarely in that space—introducing him to viewers who may have never seen his earlier work.

For those audiences wondering who the actor behind Oliver Kennedy is, the answer is simple: Avan Jogia is no overnight discovery, but rather a performer whose career has quietly evolved for more than a decade—from teen television star to one of the more intriguing faces in today’s streaming dramas.
