Cumming, GA, August 22, 2025: On August 16, 2025, the Indian Friends of Atlanta (IFA) hosted its 11th Annual Freedom Mela at the Cumming Fairgrounds, marking the 79th Indian Independence Day (August 15) and kicking off the second decade of celebrating the spirit of freedom. Since its inception in 2015, the Freedom Mela has become a beloved tradition in Atlanta, attracting thousands to celebrate the shared values of freedom and unity between India and the United States.

This year’s event drew more than 6,500 attendees, who enjoyed a variety of cultural performances, including a lively concert by the “Prince of Bhangra,” Sukhbir Singh. The event also featured a grand parade, highlighting colorful displays of traditional Indian attire, music, and performances representing India’s diverse geographic and cultural mosaic.

The Grand Parade & Concert Highlights
A central highlight of the day was the Grand Parade, led by the IFA team, with drum beats and energetic performances by various state teams showcasing regional dances, music, and cultural symbols. The parade concluded with the vibrant rhythms of Dhol Tasha and Lezim dancing, leaving the crowd energized.

A Celebration of Unity and Heritage
The event attracted local and state dignitaries, including Georgia State Representatives and Forsyth County officials, who recognized the Indian community’s contributions to Georgia’s cultural and economic landscape. IFA’s founder and Chairman Sunil Savili, along with President Sreekanth Uppala, the founding members, and the executive committee, expressed gratitude to the sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees, whose ongoing support has been instrumental to the Freedom Mela’s success. The celebration was made possible through collaboration with numerous Indian-American organizations and local businesses, whose contributions continue to drive the Mela’s growth each year.

A High-Energy Experience
With over 6,500 guests in attendance, the Mela featured a festive atmosphere brought to life by the IFA team and volunteers. The venue was adorned with Indian and American flags, a lighted “I Love IFA” display, and arches of tricolored balloons. The stage featured digital backdrops of Indian monuments, adding a modern twist to the cultural performances and creating a truly patriotic ambiance.
The event was emceed by Lakshmi Mandavilli, Bhrushira Vyas, Vikas Rattan Goyal, and Srivani Krishna, who kept the audience engaged with humor and professionalism. Performances from Atlanta-based arts academies, including patriotic music and dance, delighted attendees of all ages. A significant moment included the hoisting of the American and Indian flags by Representative Todd Jones and the IFA team, while youth chair KT Sravanthi led the singing of national anthems, bringing the crowd together in a display of collective patriotism.

Honoring Dignitaries and Community Leaders
IFA President Sreekanth Uppala introduced the founding members and executive committee, welcomed the audience, and congratulated the community on the 79th Indian Independence Day. Several notable local and state dignitaries were honored, including U.S. Representative Buddy Carter; Georgia State Senators Emmanuel Jones and Josh McLaurin; Georgia State Representatives Todd Jones, Ruwa Romman, David Clark, Dr. Michelle Au; Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin Gatson; and Dilip Tunki, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Johns Creek.
The IFA Team
The IFA team comprises founding members Sunil Savili, Sairam Pamulapati, Srinivas Peddi, Shyam Mallavarapu, Sreekanth Uppala, and Kiran Gogineni, with an advisory team including Lakshmi Thesam, Abay RadhaKrishnan, Kishan Tallapally, Raghuveer Gadipalli, Nagi Natarajan, and Sanjeev Akula. The executive committee includes Priyanka Bhor, Niranjan Podduturi, Giridhar Kotagiri, Rakesh Khanna, Hetal Mehta, Dharam Mahida, and Sagar Pabley.
Chairman Sunil Savili expressed appreciation for the sponsors, volunteers, and vibrant community support that help make the Freedom Mela a standout event each year. He delivered a passionate speech calling for further integration of the Indian community into various facets of American society.
The evening’s festivities concluded with a high-energy live concert by Sukhbir Singh, whose performance alongside four top drummers had the audience dancing and celebrating.
