Economist Santanu Chatterjee Named Dean of UGA’s Terry College of Business

Athens, GA., March 6, 2026: Santanu Chatterjee has been appointed the next dean of the University of Georgia Terry College of Business and will assume the role on April 1, according to a press release from the University of Georgia. He will serve as the college’s 13th dean.

Chatterjee, an economist and longtime faculty member at UGA, has been part of the Terry College since 2001. He currently holds the title of Dr. Harold A. Black Distinguished Professor of Economics and has received the university’s highest teaching honor as a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor.

He has held several leadership positions at the business school, including associate dean for graduate programs and director of the Full-Time MBA program. In 2025, he was appointed interim dean after Benjamin C. Ayers moved into the role of provost at the university.

During his tenure directing the Full-Time MBA program, the program gained international recognition, ranking No. 1 in value for money in the global MBA rankings published by the Financial Times in both 2024 and 2025.

Chatterjee has also played a role in launching new graduate offerings at the college, including the M.S. in Business Analytics program and expanded dual-degree MBA options with other professional schools.

Originally from India, Chatterjee earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Xavier’s College, University of Calcutta and a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics before completing a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Washington.

His research focuses on economic growth, international economics, and development economics, and his work has appeared in leading academic journals including the Journal of Development Economics and the Journal of International Economics.

Founded in 1912, the Terry College of Business is one of the largest business schools in the United States, with more than 10,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.
