NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT
Plano, TX, July 17, 2025: A couple from Plano, Texas has been arrested for allegedly defrauding more than 100 people in a fake investment scheme worth over $4 million.
Sidhartha “Sammy” Mukherjee and his wife, Sunita Mukherjee, were taken into custody in June by the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. They face first-degree felony theft charges.
Prosecutors say the couple used their glamorous public image to gain people’s trust. They hosted high-society events, Bollywood-style galas, and posed as charitable community figures. They then convinced people to invest in real estate and remodeling projects that never actually existed.
Authorities say the Mukherjees forged documents, created fake contracts with the Dallas Housing Authority (DHA), produced false invoices, and sent manipulated emails to make the scheme look legitimate. They also allegedly took out a federal PPP loan by creating a fake business and submitting false payroll records.
Some victims said they invested large sums of money, including retirement savings. One victim reportedly lost $400,000. Many said they received dividend checks that later bounced. At least 20 victims have come forward so far, but officials believe more than 100 people may have been affected.
The couple filed for bankruptcy in 2024. Investigators believe most of the money was spent on luxury living, with little left for recovery. Authorities are now looking into whether any funds were moved overseas or into cryptocurrency.
Sammy Mukherjee has denied all allegations, calling them false and driven by jealousy. After posting $500,000 bail, he was detained by immigration authorities. Reports also suggest he may have pending fraud charges in Mumbai, India.
The case gained renewed attention this week after CBS News Texas aired a detailed investigative report highlighting the scale of the alleged fraud and the couple’s glamorous public image. The report included victim interviews, statements from investigators, and court affidavits outlining how the Mukherjees used Bollywood-style events and charity appearances to build trust in the community. It also shed light on the couple’s alleged misuse of federal PPP loans and the forgery of documents tied to the Dallas Housing Authority. The CBS investigation has brought national attention to the case and prompted more victims to come forward.
The case is under investigation by local and federal authorities. Victims are being encouraged to come forward with information.
