Lilburn Hires Hungry Goats as Kudzu Contractors

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Lilburn, GA, August 27, 2025 — Lilburn City Park has some unusual contractors this week—a herd of 91 goats brought in to clear out invasive kudzu along the creek.

The goats, hired from Fritz Family Farms of Monticello, GA, will spend about 10 days munching their way through the fast-spreading vine. City officials say the herd offers an environmentally friendly alternative to machinery and chemicals.

“These goats provide a sustainable and effective solution for controlling invasive kudzu,” said Mayor Crist.

Visitors can see the herd in action from behind a temporary fence, but the animals are not available for petting. Still, their presence has already drawn a crowd. Councilman Emil Powella, who is also the city’s unofficial photographer, said he has enjoyed watching the reaction of residents. “I have spent several hours at the park since the goats arrived and have loved seeing the look on people’s faces, young and old, as they watch and talk to the goats,” he said.

Residents are encouraged to stop by Lilburn City Park during the project and watch the goats at work as they help restore the natural beauty of one of the city’s most popular green spaces.
