Sandy Springs, GA, April 9, 2026: In a first-of-its-kind celebration held on March 27, 2026, World Theatre Day was observed at the Consulate General of India, Atlanta, transforming the diplomatic venue into a vibrant hub of artistic expression. The event brought together Atlanta’s diverse creative community and highlighted the growing role of theatre within the Indian diaspora.

Exploring the Four Pillars of Abhinaya

The program offered an immersive exploration of the four pillars of Abhinaya, presenting theatre in its most expressive forms:

  • Vachik (Voice): The launch of “Rangkatha,” PACA’s radio storytelling initiative, stood out as a unique highlight. Performers, with faces hidden behind Navarasa plaques, relied solely on voice and intellect to connect with the audience.
  • Angik (Body): Pantomime acts showcased the eloquence of physical expression.
  • Satvik (Emotion): Powerful monologues were performed from iconic works such as Aashad Ka Ek DinThe Tempest, and texts by renowned playwrights Habib Tanvir and Arthur Miller.
  • Aaharya (Costume/Context): A series of engaging micro-dramas based on PACA’s original scripts brought visual storytelling to life.

Key Contributors and Performances

The event’s seamless execution was led by Jairaj Kamal, supported by consultants Prakash Srivastava and Nimish Sevak. Musical curation by Shivam Jani added depth to the evening, highlighted by a soulful Raag Yaman performance by Ankur Joshi. The program also featured versatile actor Praful Kumar Panchal, while emcee Pankaj Dixit ensured a smooth and engaging flow throughout.

Special acknowledgment was extended to the Consulate team for their support in making the event possible.

What set the event apart was its collaborative spirit. Artists from 15 different Atlanta-based groups, representing theatre, music, and dance, participated in the celebration. The multilingual nature of the performances spanning English, Hindi, and regional languages reflected the cultural diversity of the community and reinforced theatre’s ability to transcend linguistic boundaries.

The event also highlighted a broader vision to cultivate a connected and sustainable arts ecosystem in Atlanta. By bringing together established and emerging talent under one umbrella, PACA Theater is working toward creating opportunities for collaboration while strengthening cultural ties within the diaspora.

The evening concluded with a gesture of appreciation, as organizers presented a memento to the Consulate in recognition of its support for the arts. The initiative not only celebrated World Theatre Day but also set the stage for future collaborations that aim to keep the spirit of live performance thriving in the region.

With this inaugural celebration, Atlanta has taken a meaningful step toward placing theatre at the heart of its cultural dialogue, bridging heritage and contemporary expression through the enduring power of the stage.
