Indian Applicants See Shorter US Visa Interview Waits in Some Cities

NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

Washington D.C., January 19, 2025: Indian applicants seeking U.S. visas may be able to secure interview appointments faster in certain cities, according to the latest global visa wait time data released by the U.S. Department of State on January 14.

The updated figures show wide variation in wait times across Indian consulates and visa categories. While some cities continue to face long backlogs, others are currently offering comparatively quicker access to interview slots.

For visitor visas (B1/B2), cities such as Hyderabad and Kolkata are reporting shorter wait periods, providing relief for applicants planning travel to the United States. In contrast, New Delhi continues to experience longer delays, reflecting sustained high demand at the capital’s consular post.

The data also shows uneven availability for student and employment-based visas, with wait times differing by city. This variation could influence where students and professionals choose to schedule their interviews, particularly those working with tight academic or employment timelines.

Officials note that applicants who are flexible about their interview location within India may be able to obtain earlier appointments and move through the visa process more quickly. The Department of State continues to advise applicants to monitor the official appointment scheduling system regularly, as interview slot availability can change frequently.
