It is important to be productive when out of work because Employers will ask you what you did in between jobs...

Given the recent massive layoffs at Ford Motors, I thought it would be helpful to shed some light on what to do when you are out of work after a long time.

It is important to be productive when out of work because Employers will ask you what you did in between jobs. You need to have some answers to show the Employer that you are an active job seeker and “nothing” just won’t do in this competitive job market. Being productive while out of work is not only beneficial to your job search, but to you as well. Studies show that people tend to get feelings of depression, hopelessness and discouragement while out of work. Being productive will take your mind off of these things and encourage a healthy lifestyle and hopefully help you get back to work soon!

Here are a few suggestions on how to spend your time off.

Do Some Volunteer Work!!
It is good for the community and a great place to meet new people and network.

Higher Education
I would highly suggest becoming involved with career oriented activities or continuing education classes. These show that you are still interested in your field and you are willing to take initiative to stay at the top of your field. You also need to keep your skills up to date, so why not take a class or even start pursuing a higher degree.

Why not be a Consultant?
Anyone can be a consultant! You just need clients! Get yourself some business cards and become an independent consultant in your field of expertise. It is a great networking tool and you can stay involved in your career. You will also be able to give your business card to more people and build your social network. Who knows, your consulting business might even take off.

Now is the time to start a Business
If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business, a period of unemployment may actually be the time to try to pull it off. In starting up a business, you will be able to brush up on so many skills that will help you in your job search.

Enjoy!!
Take this time to do the things you didn’t get to do while always working, like volunteering at your child’s school or redecorating the house. You could even try to take a little vacation with your family. Enjoy this time off because you will be back at work in no time!
