The Minority Technology Council (MTech), the latest group within the TAG (Technology Association of Georgia) held its inaugural meeting on July 20, 2004 at Georgia Tech’s newly built Technology Square Research Building.
Richard Campbell, CEO of Securiant, and MTech Council Chair, outlined Mtech’s mission to promote awareness, visibility and advancement of ethnic minority technology entrepreneurs, corporate executives and professionals through an open and inclusive forum where members network, share best practices and gain fast track access to mentoring, business and leadership opportunities. Campbell emphasized this is an inclusive forum and it encourages its members to benefit from the diverse views that the minority diasporas bring.
Jose M. Marrero, VP and CIO of the AGCO Corporation, and member of the MTech Council Advisory Board, pointed out that Hispanics have grown in U.S. population by 643% since 1990. Since minorities are a vital and growing part of the U.S. population, they need to be encouraged to participate and contribute more in the business and tech community.
John Yates, partner at Morris Manning and Martin, and also part of the MTech Council Advisory Board, was also a speaker at the event. Yates promised that MTech will work to bring in investors, influence boards of directors, and educate the traditional business community about minority entrepreneurship.
The MTech board was then invited to answer questions from the 250 attendees. One of the MTech board members is Manoj Mehta, VP of Business Development at Paalam, Inc. Manoj’s goal is to see the Indian Entrepreneurial population play a vital role in this broad based organization.
