Ivy League Entrepreneurs Take on College Test Prep Industry

To prep or not to prep? For a growing number of high school parents and students, that is the question. And with college admissions getting more competitive every year, many students have begun turning to a short list of pricey test prep companies to help them earn the scores they need to compete.

Ivy Insiders is a new type of education company that is changing the way high school students prepare for college admissions. Using an approach developed by America's top minds and tutoring talent from the world's most competitive universities, Ivy Insiders help students stay a step ahead in the college admissions game.

The company has hired other Ivy League undergrads who scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT as instructors. They understood that as the students took the test so recently and did so well, they were in the best position to teach the methods behind scoring well on the test. Right now there are a few hundred branches across the country.

“In Georgia, I believe there is one branch in Duluth, and another branch separate from mine in Marietta,” says Varun Sampath, one of the Georgia instructors. Sampath currently attends Penn, where he is majoring in Computer Science and is an Information Technology Advisor at his College House.

The course costs $699 for 18 hours of lecture and 4 full SAT practice exams, and there are also hefty discounts and financial aid available. All of the instructors also offer private tutoring.

In its five years of existence, Ivy Insiders has helped over 4,000 students raise their SAT scores by an average of almost 300 points—results that outpaces most traditional test prep companies by a factor of two. According to Patel, such unprecedented success can be traced to two unique features of Ivy Insiders: an innovative curriculum developed by Harvard students who scored perfect 2400s on the New SAT and a teaching staff with average SAT scores in the 99th percentile.
