Thomas
Kodenkandath, who uses Thommy as the penname
is a self-taught cartoonist. Born and brought-up in
Kerala, he published his first editorial cartoon at the
age of 17 in The Express, a popular Malayalam daily.
Since then more than 300 of his editorial cartoons have
appeared in various print media that include The Week,
OnLooker, The Express, India Week and they currently
appear in Urban Indian (NY), India-New England (MA) and
Malayalapathram (NY). He has won several awards for
cartooning including RoteFete Award of Rotary Club
International, Kalakrithi Award of Madras University,
Mardigras Prize of IIT-Madas. He served as the editorial
cartoonist for the IIT-M student’s magazines, Campus
Times, Spectator and now as the cartoon editor for their
Off-campus Times. He is a founding member of Kerala

Professionally, he is the Principal Scientist at
American Superconductor Corporation, Westborough, MA
where he work towards “revolutionizing the way the
world uses electricity” using High Temperature
Superconductor Technology. After his college years at st.
Thomas, Trissur, he earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from
IIT-M at the Materials Science Research Center. He is
the recipient of the prestigious UNESCO Fellowship of
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Italian
National Research Council (CNR) Italy. He was a Research
Fellow at Imperial College, London before coming to the
USA. He is the author of over 50 research papers
covering fundamental and applied sciences of advanced
materials and is the lead inventor in 9 patent
applications. While at IIT-M, he met Shri. R.K. Laxman,
the celebrated cartoonist of Times of India and
Magsaysay Award winner, who inspired him to continue
cartooning along with a scientific career. He recently
won the 2005 Kerala Center (NY) Annual Award (Special
Recognition) for his “extraordinary combination of
talents as an Outstanding Scientist and Gifted
Cartoonist”
He is an active member of Indian community in New
England and lives in North Grafton with his wife, Rekha
and daughters Bridgit, Priya and Mary. He can be
