A Black-Tie Affair

It's all about the 3Fs- Fit, Function and Formality- when dressing
 for a "very formal" event.

I was recently invited by a friend to attend a black-tie event, and, when thinking about what I should wear that day, it dawned on me that my next In Vogue installment should cover how women should dress for such an event. I say this because it is often unclear what precisely constitutes a “Black-Tie” event, as many a person (including myself) has confused a cocktail party for a black-tie affair, or simply thought one could only wear only black attire (not so!). To put it simply, black-tie translates to “very formal.”

First, you’ll need to select the style of the dress you’re going to wear for the event. Focus on the cut that best flatters your figure. For purposes of satisfying “3Fs” (Fit, Function, and Formality), my first suggestion is to look for a full-length gown. Dresses or skirts that end at the knee are often perceived as semi-formal or cocktail attire. Another “F”, finish, is also equally important; materials like silk, velvet, and satin, or pieces with heavy textured work (i.e., rich embroidery and beadwork) are always favorites. Finally, choose a color that compliments both your complexion and your date’s ensemble (most likely he will be wearing black, which, of course, goes with everything). Crisp pastels, metallic (silver and gold-but keep it simple), and deep blues, burgundies are all perfectly acceptable evening colors.

Of course, do accessorize. For this kind of event, I would suggest wearing jewelry pieces like diamond sets or pearls, if they compliment your gown. Also, treat yourself to an elegant hairstyle (one that you do not typically opt for), and be sure to get a manicure and a pedicure.

Last, but certainly not least, make sure you’re date is wearing a tuxedo. You certainly won’t be the belle of the ball if your date shows up wearing that infamous tuxedo t-shirt (don’t laugh – I know you’ve seen it) with his 15 year old pair of jeans. If you follow my rules above, you will fulfill the last “F” – Fabulous – which you will surely be.
