The Greeks invented logic
but were not fooled by it- Eric Hoffer
Decisions, decisions and more decisions. That is what we do in
every day life. Every time we make a decision, we back it up with
logical reason. Logic is known as reasoned and reasonable
judgment. But, honestly do we always take decisions purely based
on logic? Not really. How else do you explain the following?
*Very often, I notice people coming to exercise at our Health
Fitness Center circling the parking lot in search a parking space
closest to the entrance. Once inside the center, they get on to
the treadmill to walk/run for miles. Is there any logic to it?
*You may notice at these fitness centers, those who are ‘slim
and trim’ will be working out much harder than those who really
need to lose some weight or are badly in need of shaping up their
bodies. Mostly, they spend time in chatting. Is there any logic to
it?
*Our college bound children would like to make their own decisions
in choosing a college of their choice and the course that they
would like to major in. Though they expect parents to pay for
their decisions (tuition and boarding etc.,), they don’t want
them to be part of that decision making process. Is there any
logic to it?
*All countries that have stock piled nuclear weapons say they have
them for peaceful purposes. Nuclear weapons for peaceful purposes!
Any logic to it?
*How many times, during wars, have we heard the clichéd slogan,
“We are fighting for peace”. Fighting for peace? Any logic to
it?
*A burglar, who gets caught again and again, still attempts it one
more time. Don’t expect me to believe that he is trying to
perfect his act.
*A chain smoker says, “So far I quit smoking 15 times”. Any
logic to it?
*Every time Oprah Winfrey gains and loses weight, she authors a
diet book and people keep buying it. Why?
Life teaches us, many decisions made with good logic could also go
wrong. But if it occurs too often, then we could agree with Morris
Kline and term it as “the art of being wrong with confidence”.
I will let you go and think deeply and seriously what is logic all
about. To make sure you don’t take it too seriously, here is a
joke:
Under certain conditions, US taxpayers are required to file an
estimated income tax return. A friend of mine is so upset by this
that he sends his return in without either name or address. His
reasoning?
"If they're going to make me guess how much I'm going to
make, then they
can guess who the hell sent it in."
And that is it for this time….
