Disasters can happen quickly and without warning. Plan to have an emergency backup for all your documents.

The thought of disasters scare us all, however it is important to prepare yourself financially for the unexpected. Keeping records and copies of important documents in the event of a disaster can save you a lot of heartache in a time when finances may be of least concern.

Make copies of all of your important financial documents for an Emergency Backup File. It would be best to create 2 discs with all of your scanned data and keep those in a safe deposit box in your local bank. You can also keep actual copies of the documents in the safe deposit box. I would also recommend giving a copy of the disc to a trustworthy relative in another state.
Your Backup File should include the following:
· Copies of you and your spouse’s driver's license
· Copies (front and back) of your credit cards
· Your birth and marriage certificates. Also include birth certificates for your children.
·- Your insurance polices (Life, Health, Auto, etc.)
-Your Social Security card
-Previous years tax returns
-Your bank account numbers
-A pay stub
-Home mortgage and deed information
-Your vehicles' titles and registrations
-Your personal legal documents, such as a will

The originals of all of this important information need to be stored in a fireproof safe. Fireproof safes can be found in your local Walmart or Home Depot retail stores. Please make sure the safe is small enough to carry with you in the event of an emergency. Also include cash and extra checks in the safe for the emergency.
